CHURCH OF RATCHETNESS

I hadn’t been to church in over a decade. It always seemed to me to be some form of hustle that was designed to fleece the pockets of the flock. I have forever been a believer in God, yet in my mind he should be free. When they started to put ATM’s in churches is when I lost it. When they put flat screen televisions and big bands in the background I was lost further. Somehow the down home nature of the God that I once knew was replaced with glamour and glitz.

I miss the old days when people went to church and their sole purpose was to uplift the name of God. It wasn’t a fashion show or some music fest. It was all about being a better person and your relationship with God.

So many things have died in our community. The black family has gone stale, and been reduced to chickenheads, thug niggas, baby mamas, petty criminals and fatherless sons. The image of the black male has gone stale. It’s either crack spot, jump shot, dead or in jail. The image of the black woman is equally stale. On a global scale she is seen as a hopeless, project chickenhead, with no suitable prospects in the form men or a life she can look forward to. At the top of the list the black church has gone stale. It’s more of a spectacle and less about submitting to the will of God. A change had to come, and it had to come soon.

Here I sit a hypocrite. My daughter out in the boondocks having aggressive sex with some music producer who tells her she’s the moon and stars. My son is afraid to tell his father that he wants to go to Revolution University because it will make him a strong black man. My husband is confused about who he is and broken by a non - present father who he is just getting to know. As far as my own personal demons with the sex club, everything is beginning to get to me. Here I sit with a million dollar check in my pocket because a man wants to see a dog get fucked live and in the flesh. Of course I could use the money. Of course it would be enough for me to quit for the rest of my life, but too far is too far. I had to speak to someone. I would visit the church I was reared in.

Liberty Hill AME Zion church was a relic from the past. There were no bands playing in the background, no flat screen televisions, no ATM’s in the lobby, and no fancy programs to raise money. There was no hip hop swag about the place, overly expansive parking, bells or even whistles. The only thing in the room was a few pews, some cracked stain glass windows, an aging congregation, and the word of God. Really it is all you need. We forgot that in our quest to line our pockets and be fantastic.
